Giving it Away: The Vegan Slow Cooker

A Vegan Slow Cooker CoverI’m celebrating my blog’s one year birthday (which was October 21) by giving away a copy of Kathy Hester’s cookbook, The Slow Cooker Vegan.  I won’t be giving away my much-used copy, however.  Kathy has generously offered to send a pristine copy directly to the winner of this giveaway.

I’ve been cooking from Kathy’s book for a while now and have talked it up in some earlier posts like Other People’s Food (& Drink) Part 2 and Maple Pumpkin Spice Latte (for the Slow Cooker).  That’s why I’m especially pleased to be offering a copy of this wonderful resource.  One could cook from this book all year long.  Kathy makes everything, and I mean everything in the slow cooker: brownies, fondue, beverages, seitan, granola, smoked tofu and of course, oatmeal, soups, stews and curries.  I have it direct from the source that she owns 20 (maybe more?) slow cookers.  Puts my measly three to shame.

There are lots of ways to enter the giveaway – just scroll down to the bottom of this post and climb into the Rafflecopter.  Unfortunately, my freebie WordPress site does not allow for the cool Rafflecopter widget, but the link below will get you where you need to go.  The contest ends November 19 and I’ll announce the winter on November 20.

Oh and by the way, Kathy has another cookbook  – The Great Vegan Bean Book: Lentil, Legumes, and Peas Galore! – coming out in June 2013.  I’ve already pre-ordered my copy!

And now onto some of the tasty things I made from The Slow Cooker Vegan:

Oatmeal in Bowl

Smoked Tofu IngredientsBaigan Bharta

Tofu Hash Brown Breakfast Casserole

Chili-chocolate Black Bean Brownies

Thai Coconut Pumpkin Soup

One year ago today: Wild Rice & Dried Cherry Cookies
One year and one day ago: Label Conscious

Everything I’ve made so far – and that has been quite a few things – have been delicious. Plus I always feel very self-satisfied knowing something is cooking away while I’m doing something else ;-).

Thank you Annie but I feel others would benefit more. I have a slow cooker that is perfectly pristine – never used!

This book is awesome, I gave one away alongside an Indian Chickpea Quinoa Stew recipe almost a year ago. I still go back to this book often!

I don’t want a copy because I also have a much used copy of her book as well. I just wanted to say that your photos are just beautiful. I might have to put the Thai Coconut Pumpkin soup on my list for the end of the week.

I’m new to vegan cooking. – and still am looking for ideas. – I have a slow cooker and think this book would be something I would use, since I hear great reviews and the pictures here look delicious.

Catherine, it’s a really good one to have in your vegan cookbook arsenal! I love being able to put everything in the pot, turn it on and forget about it until dinner (or lunch…or breakfast). Plus Kathy is a sweetheart ;-).

This would be the perfect excuse to purchase a new slow cooker! Our old one is, well, old. It works fine, so I haven’t been able to convince the hubs we need a new one, but if I started using it more, I could probably convince him of the benefits of a timer and better temp control. (Our current ancient model only has off, low, and high.)

Here’s the thing…this book convinced me that I needed big, medium and small slow cookers…Oy. I use them ALL, though! Anyway – good luck getting a newer model (not the hubs, the slow cooker 😉 )!

I have made vegan cake in the slow cooker and it was AMAZING! Would love to win this book but I seem to have problems entering contests from your site.

I’ve never baked a cake in a slow cooker, and it probably isn’t the first thing I’d try, but it does seem like a convenient way to cook soups and stews.

I’d love to win your cookbook. My omni sister-in-law has your book & recently made the pumpkin pie pudding to take to a party. Everyone loved it!

I would love to have more ideas for my slow cookers (only 3, plus a rice cooker with slow cooking capability, according to the packaging). They sit there unused, waiting for inspiration to strike. Thanks for sharing.

Oh yeah – and I’ve made a “cake” topped cobbler, and a molten chocolate lava cake-like thing in my slow cookers, but haven’t made one I could pull out.

This is an awesome book! I bought it at the beginning of fall to try and make weeknight dinners easier. Excellent book for a giveaway.

I checked this out from the library but it was summer so I didn’t really take advantage of it. I think I may need it for thanksgiving. I hear there’s going to be a lot of great food to enjoy!

my brain doesn’t process recipes’ too well but that’s what i have my husband for (i do better watching videos)– this is a great thing! i have done the slow cooking with meat when i ate it and cooking beans but mostly since i became a herbivore i only use it for beans. good to know there’s so much more i could be using it for!

Also, I have one slow cooker. Haven’t used it much but I’m hoping to fix that with this cookbook. (I’m not sure if I’m supposed to answer that question here?

I really really want this book! I love the idea of the crock pot, and I have one, but I always forget about it and never really use it. I want to, though! Whenever I do, I am always amazed at how easy whatever I made was, lol. I have never made a cake in it before…I have seen recipes for them, but I have always wondered if it would really work?? I would love to try it :-)

I am a little confused about the raffle thingy, but there was a question about how many slow cookers you own? Do we answer that here as well? I own 1. How many do you need, lol?!?

I would totally love to win this cookbook. I bought a slowcooker because of a recipe that Kathy Hester once posted on her blog but I’ve only used the slow cooker like once or twice since then. I need more recipe ideas :)

I’ve never baked a cake in a slow cooker, but my husband is always telling me about the black forest cakes he used to make in a camping dutch oven. I should suggest he try it in the slow cooker!

This book has been on my covet list for a while. I used a slowcooker a lot more before we went plant-based, I guess I was at a loss for ideas. I’ve recently come up with several recipes I want to try but I’ve never made a cake or anything sweet except oatmeal in my slow cooker.

Just used my crockpot for the first time ever. sat in the kitchen and watched it for at least 3 hours thinking it was going to set fire or explode. hahah i think i will relax eventually though

I know exactly how you felt – – I did the same thing recently with an old slow cooker that I’d never used before. The sides felt unusually hot so I had a big space cleared all around it “just in case.” Thankfully, it worked just fine.

I went ahead and ordered it; if I’m lucky enough to win a copy, then I’ll have two!

Most of all, I’ve gotten so incensed by my roommate using the slow cooker to cook nothing but pot roast or beef stew, it would be wonderful to make something meat-free in it.

Apparently I get a Rafflecopter Merit Badge or something for saying whether I ever made a cake in a slow cooker, so: I just made this stuff with the exact texture of cornbread. Only it was supposed to be vegan meatloaf! So you be the judge, folks. 😉 And will this UK expat be debarred from Thanksgiving dinner for suggesting that cornbread is “cake”??

Congratulations to an oasis of friendly sanity amid the loony crapola that is the Web!

Hi Steve – Glad to hear you are well on your way to earning your Rafflecopter merit badge ;-)! Best of luck in taking home the prize. I say that you should be most welcome at any T-day feast – a good cornbread indeed should be very cake-like!
