Sprouter’s Dream Giveaway from Todd’s Seeds & Some Sprouting Q&A

Todd's SeedsTodd and I had so much fun giving away a one pound bag of broccoli sprouts back in April that we decided to do it again – – and to do it up BIG! This is one amazing package of sprouting goodies.  I know a lot of you are sprouting veterans, but there are still lots of folks who haven’t tried it and might even feel intimidated – as I once did.  I thought a little Q&A might ease those jitters:

Why should I eat sprouts?
Sprouts are delicious!  They add a nice earthy flavor to sandwiches, soups, and salads – but don’t be fooled by their diminutive size.

  • Sprouting amps up the quality of the proteins in seeds (as well as in nuts and beans);
  • the vitamin content in sprouts is through the roof;
  • sprouts contain more enzymes than raw fruits and veggies;
  • and sprouts are alkalizing to our bodies – which helps create an unfriendly environment for the growth of cancer cells.

How could something so tiny and seemingly frail be so full of goodness??

I’ve never sprouted before – is it hard?
Nope. If I can do it – black thumb and all – anyone can do it. It’s as basic as soaking, rinsing and letting the seeds sprout and grow just a little bit. Full instructions are available on Todd’s website.

Why is June the perfect month to sprout?
For the same reason that January, February, March, April, May, July, August, September, October, November and December are the perfect sprouting months! You don’t need warm weather or steady sunshine; you don’t need a trowel, gardening gloves or a big, heavy watering can. You can sprout in the tiniest of kitchens. All you need is a quart jar or a tray that drains; clean water, seeds and a little bit of patience. Cute, nutrient-rich sprouts will be ready for consuming within a couple of days!

Why are sprouts so darn cute?
Much like baby sloths, heck, baby anything – sprouts are cute because they’re tiny versions of the big plants we love!

Okay, okay already!  You’ve convinced me! I can’t wait to start! But where do I get seeds? I don’t have a jar or tray! Help!

        I want all the baby sloths, cause they are just like me. They lay about all day and eat plants…..

    That is a great giveaway! I’ve only done sprouting things in a very small way but I can imagine getting quite hooked on it, I love the rich green of that wheatgrass.

      Sorry you can’t enter the giveaway, Lorna :-(. Hehe, I’m so impressed with my wheatgrass-growing ability – not that I have anything to do with it. But it’s about the only think I can grow!

    The only thing I’ve ever sprouted was quinoa in a colander with a towel over it. This would be super cool! :)

    I have never sprouted, but I have been really wanting sprouts and they are no longer available in my local stores. I really like mung and alfalfa.

    Oooooh. Gear! This would make my sprout operation much less messy and ridiculous, and would allow me to branch out. I’ve been so jealous of your wheatgrass success. Great giveaway Annie!

    I tried sprouting in the past with mixed results. Perhaps with a little guidance I would have more success! I’d love to try again – I love sprouts in salads and on sandwiches!

    Aah! That sloth is so cute! I approve of any excuse for more sloth pics! The only time I’ve sprouted was quinoa for Miyoko Schinner’s recipes in Artisan Vegan Cheese.

    I have a question about sprouting wheatgrass. My juicer can’t juice wheatgrass. If you’re not juicing it, are there other ways to use it?

      Oh boy – I’m a quinoa sprouting failure! I tried – also for Miyoko’s cheese – and it just went straight to rotten. What is up with that?!

      Here’s what I’ve learned…I cut the wheatgrass when it’s soft and young, maximum about 5″ high. I put water in my Vitamix and then add a big handful of wheatgrass, process, and strain into a glass. As long as the grass isn’t old/tough, it works fine. It’s probably against all of the rules, but I cannot justify buying a wheatgrass juicer!

    Oh I so would love to get on the sprouting train – but somehow, imagine!? have never tried it!
    I know it so good for us and I love to put sprouts in salads – I could just imagine how wonderful it would be to have made them myself. And wheatgrass juice – huuurrayyy :-)
    Beautiful photos – you convinced we to try!!

      Woo-woo (sound of wheatgrass train coming into the station)!! This is SO YOU – you have GOT to try it. I usually have 5 different kinds in the refrigerator at all times and they go on everything!

        Yes SO me – I know – it’s crazy I have never tried it yet!
        Can’t wait – I want to have 5 different types in my refrigerator too :-)
        Thanks for the inspiration!

    We generally sprout lentils, and then I use them to make not-tuna salad. I keep threatening to juice wheatgrass in our new juicer, but… maybe when we do our juice cleanse next week…

      Maybe?! You gotta! Get that chlorophyll-rich and alkalizing, life-giving liquid going! (have I convinced you yet?)

      It only seems fair that I try sprouting lentils…do you just use regular ol’ lentils?

      Reply
      1. VegansHusband

        Yeah, we just use green lentils, and I’ll pick up a ready of wheat grass for our cleanse. Would you start the 3 days with it, or would you wrap up with the wheat grass?

    I’ve had terrible luck sprouting in the past. Everything turned into a slimy mess. I need to buck up and try again.

      Oh no! I’m sure we can get you sprouting successfully, Mary! I really recommend the sprouting trays that I now use: http://www.amazon.com/Victorio-VKP1014-4-Tray-Kitchen-Sprouter/dp/B005FVPP04/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1371818673&sr=8-1&keywords=sprouting+trays They work beautifully – no fuss, no muss.

    I’ve only sprouted lentils recently… as a kid we used to sprout other stuff but I have no idea what! I love the fresh crunch that sprouts bring to a salad or a wrap!

    I”m kind of a lentil sprouting fan. They are bigger than most so I have larger windows to forget them. I also ALWAYS have them. That helps too.

    My favorite sprouts are sunflower seeds but they’re a little more time consuming so my second favorite it radish seeds, or broccoli or mustard or …,,,,la, la, la. Any sprouts will do!
    Thanks Annie 😉
