Raw Black-eyed PeasYes, I should have a recipe here for black-eyed peas, but like every other holiday this year, New Years got away from me.  So today’s post is not only black-eyed-pea-recipe-free, it is also just plain recipe-free.  Until I moved to Oklahoma, I was unaware of the tradition – dating back to the Civil War – of eating a dish made with black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day.   The story goes that General William Tecumseh Sherman burned all of the crops save for black-eyed pea plants, thereby leaving a nourishing source of food for the impoverished populace.  Apparently consuming them will bring one luck and since we could all use any good luck we can get, it’s probably wise to make these beans a part of the menu.  Good vegan black-eyed peas recipes abound out there, so go forth, discover – and cook!

Happy New Year – may 2012 bring happiness and success, enriching experiences, fun and joy – and most of all:  healthy, unrefined, delicious and animal- and cruelty-free eating.
