An Unrefined Vegan Turns One

CakesGoing back through the past year of An Unrefined Vegan posts is a lot like looking through photos from the 1980s: a bit embarrassing, funny (in a not-so-good way), entertaining and enlightening.  But as a nearly day-to-day chronicle of my food choices, it’s interesting to see where I was and how far I’ve come along.  In some cases, I want to go back and redo (or undo) and in fewer cases, I’m pretty impressed with myself.  Hard to believe I’ve made it through a full year of blogging.

To say thanks for the people who come ’round to visit my blog – many of whom have become friends – and to celebrate turning a big one year old, I’m going to be giving away a copy of one of my favorite cookbooks - but I’ll be doing that in early November – between Vegan MoFo and the Virtual Vegan Potluck, there’s just way too much going on right now.  So, please stay tuned for that.  It’s a fantastic cookbook (perfect for the season) and a great resource both for plant-based newbies and old hands at vegan cooking and I’d love to share it with someone.

The Unprocessed Giveaway Winner And…MoFo!

Cover of UnprocessedCongratulations to JOYNESS SPARKLES!!  She is the lucky winner of a copy of Chef AJ’s book, Unprocessed!  Here is the comment she wrote:

What a wonderful giveaway, thank you so much for hosting! :)

I have been so thankful for the plant-based diet. It has not only opened my eyes to the world around us, but I feel better. I can hear what my body is telling me now that the static and white noise is gone and when I don’t feel well, I can usually pin point exactly what it is. That in itself is amazing to me! Before going plant-based, my downfall was sugar. Now I get that mostly through plants with the occassional organic and free trade dark chocolate. Whereas in the past, I could easily eat a half gallon of ice cream, now I like to opt for an in season fruit such as watermelon or cantaloupe. It is really rather an exciting change!

Thanks to everyone who took the time to stop by, comment and visit my Facebook pages.  And a big, unprocessed thanks to Chef AJ for making the giveaway* possible.

Now for a very short hiatus as I prepare myself and my blog for The Vegan Month of Food (VeganMoFo) 2012.  I’m getting plenty of rest, drinking lots of water and am pounding out the road miles to build up my endurance.  See you on October 1!

Virtual Vegan Potluck: Final Update!

Eat!

Two days away…Are you ready?

I’ve heard from most of you and the answer to that question has been a resounding yes!  Below is the final list of participants.  Is that list a thing of beauty, or what?!

Please check this list and confirm that you’ve got the correct links in your text or on your “Go Back” and “Go Forward” buttons.  If you haven’t copied and inserted these buttons into your blog post, please visit the VVP Page to get them.  Detailed instructions are available there as well.  If you’d like to add a Virtual Vegan Potluck button to your blog, you can find that on the VVP Page, too.

Couple of reminders (can you tell I love lists?):

1) For those of us in North America: please publish your posts as soon as possible on May 12.  As I mentioned earlier, I will be scheduling mine to publish automatically at midnight on May 11.  For those wonderful bloggers joining us from the U.K., the Continent or Australia, maybe hold back a bit before publishing your posts.  Give the rest of time to wake up, stretch and down a slurp of coffee before we hit the Publish button.

2) Please double check your links to the blog that comes before you in the circle and the blog that comes after you in the circle.  A broken circle means lost readers.  I will be eating my way through the Potluck and will try and check the links, but if you come across one that doesn’t work or if the blogger has not published their Potluck post, please let me know or contact the blogger directly.

3) Update your links either the day of the Potluck or the day after.  The links should reflect the actual URL to the post, not the URL to the blog in general.  For further explanation, visit the VVP Page.

4) Jason over at Watch Me Lose 150 Pounds had a couple of great ideas (good thing we added him to the list, no?).  He’s planning on having an easy-to-print pdf file available in his post so readers can print out his appetizer recipe.  If I knew how to do this, I’d offer one, too!  His other fantastic idea is to create an e-book of all of our recipes and make it available for purchase on Amazon.com at a very reasonable price.  What do you think?  I think we should give it a go.  This is something we can put together – as Jason says – after the dust settles.

5) Another great idea came from Shira at In Pursuit of More – a Twitter hash tag.  I am mostly clueless when it comes to Twitter, but this is a really great way to spread the word.  Please use #virtualvegpotluck when Tweeting about the event.

6) I want to thank you all once again for being a part of this world-wide plant-based blogging event.  I’ve been continually amazed and cheered by your enthusiasm and support.  Let’s hope we have a very successful Potluck and that it is the first of many!

My Sally Field Moment*

I’m happy to report that the 2012 Award Season has not, unlike every year since my birth, passed me by!  It’s true: nominated in not one, but in two categories, I’ve gone home with three coveted prizes.  My Oklahoma living blog, Dough, Dirt & Dye, recently snagged a Versatile Blogger Award from Sweet Posy Dreams and the other day I went home with the heretofore unknown Liebster Blog Award, bestowed upon me by the ethereally-named and culinarily-attuned, Luminous Vegans.  And just when I thought the festivities were over and it was time to return the borrowed jewels, Nolita at M*O*R*G*A*N*I*C honored Dough, Dirt & Dye with another Liebster!  What a week!  I really appreciate all of the attention!  The most gratifying part of blogging is the connections I’ve made over the past several months.  Thank you to everyone who reads and comments on my blogs – and an extra big thank you to Luminous Vegans and M*O*R*G*A*N*I*C.

Here’s how it works (and I quote):

“Liebster is German and translates into English as “dearest” or ”favorite”.   A Liebster Blog Award is given to talented bloggers who have less than 200 followers. So, in a way the award not only recognizes these bloggers as amazingly gifted in their own right but also as your very own personal favorites.”

How to participate:

  • Thank your Liebster Blog Award presenter on your blog.
  • Link back to the blogger who presented the award to you.
  • Copy and paste the blog award on your blog.
  • Present the Liebster Blog Award to 5 blogs of 200 followers or less who you feel deserve to be noticed. (Some say just 3 or more blogs of less than 200 followers each)
  • Let them know they have been chosen by leaving a comment at their blog.

I’m cheating a little bit here by combining both Liebsters in one blog, so please forgive me.  Here are my picks:

SconesLorna’s Tearoom Delights
As I read Lorna’s blog entries about the various tea shops she visits, it’s easy to imagine myself there with her, tucked into a comfortable chair (it probably should be raining or at least misty outside) with a pot of steaming tea in front of me alongside a flaky pastry or moist slice of cake.  Her accompanying photos take me right into the shops – their delicate edibles, the quirky decor and cozy charm.  The good service and the bad service…

The Live Better Blog (aka Absolute Haven)
Jenn’s blog makes me laugh and what could be better than that?  And since she writes about everything and anything, it’s always interesting, sometimes provocative and usually hilarious.  I am especially looking forward to reading about her adventure in building (and living in) a Tiny home.

Waffles and SyrupVegan Kat
After myself, Kathryn was the first person to Like my Facebook page – mere days after I’d launched An Unrefined Vegan.  I thought, “How on earth did she find me?  And how cool is that?”  I feel like I’ve been in it since the beginning with her and I always look forward to her posts and spins on vegan cooking.  Kathryn is focusing on breakfast items this month in honor of National Hot Breakfast Month (not to be confused with National Breakfast Month which is in September).

Heather’s Vegan Diary (Becoming Vegan)
Heather is relatively new to the blogging and vegan scene.  A mutual Oklahoma vegan blogger (there’s a mouthful for you!) introduced me to her blog, and I am so impressed with her effort, sincerity and commitment to a new lifestyle.  Especially since she’s raising a toddler and trying to introduce him to veganism.  In a state where vegans are as rare as unicorns, it’s nice to have someone else join the ranks.

And here I mention two blogs that would have been included in this list had someone not beaten me to the punch, and awarded them already: A Tablespoon of Liz and Edible Substance.  And if you haven’t visited Luminous Vegans and M*O*R*G*A*N*I*C there’s still time!  Go!!  And please take some time to explore all of these creative blogs!

*You like me, you really, really like me!
